The race

About the Berlin Marathon

The Berlin Marathon has been run since 1974 and is one of the World Marathon Majors. It is famous for speed: the marathon world record has been broken in Berlin on thirteen occasions, including Eliud Kipchoge's 2:01:09 in 2022. From 2027 the race is called the Generali Berlin-Marathon, after many years as the BMW Berlin-Marathon.

With more than 50,000 finishers in recent years, a flat course and usually mild autumn weather, Berlin is a natural choice for a personal best. The route loops through the city's districts and passes through the Brandenburg Gate just before the finish, with bands and crowds along the way. It suits runners of every level who want a fast, well-organised race.

Course

The Berlin Marathon course

The race starts on the Straße des 17. Juni in the Tiergarten, passes the Victory Column and the government district, then heads east into Mitte and Friedrichshain. From there it swings south through Kreuzberg and Neukölln and west through Schöneberg and Steglitz, the quieter middle part of the race.

The final kilometres come back via the Kurfürstendamm, Potsdamer Platz and Gendarmenmarkt before the turn onto Unter den Linden and the run through the Brandenburg Gate to the finish. The course is flat, with wide roads and long straights, which is why so many records have been set here. The main risks are a crowded start and a warm day.

Race-day weather

Late September race mornings in Berlin are usually mild, around 10–15°C at the start and warmer by midday, with dry weather more common than rain; some years have been warm.

For this course

Berlin is in late September, so most of your build falls in summer. Long runs and marathon-pace sessions in the heat will feel hard: run them early in the day, adjust pace to the temperature and trust that the cooler race morning will help. Because the course is flat and fast, much of your quality work should be at goal marathon pace on flat roads, including long runs with 15–20 km at that pace. Practise drinking from cups at speed, as aid stations get crowded.

See the marathon pace chart or a sample sub-4 plan.

Print a pace band for the Berlin Marathon, with the race clock at every kilometre.
