The race

About the Florence Marathon

The Florence Marathon has been run since 1984 and is now Italy's second-largest marathon, with 10,195 finishers in 2025. It starts and finishes in Piazza del Duomo, beside Brunelleschi's dome, and the organiser's tagline, “We Run in Art Since 1984”, sums it up: the route is a tour of the Renaissance city.

The late-November date makes it one of the last big marathons of the European season, a good target after an autumn build or a second chance after an earlier race. The course is mostly flat and allows a solid time, though cold or wet weather is part of the deal.

Course

The Florence Marathon course

Runners set off from Piazza del Duomo, and the course combines the historic centre with long stretches along the Arno and through the wider city, including Piazza Santa Maria Novella, the Ponte alla Vittoria and a passage through the stadium area. The centre provides the highlights: Ponte Vecchio, Piazza della Signoria, the Uffizi, Piazza Santa Croce and the Lungarno embankments.

The finish is on Via dei Pecori, beside the Duomo. The profile is mostly flat, with no major climbs. Expect stone-paved streets in the old town and a number of tight corners, which are worth practising for, especially on tired legs late in the race.

Race-day weather

Late-November mornings in Florence are usually cold, around 5–12°C, and rain is possible.

For this course

Florence falls at the end of November, so your build runs through autumn as temperatures drop, a good season for quality work. Prepare for a cold start by rehearsing your race-morning routine in the cold, and test what you will wear if it rains. With few hills, focus on sustained marathon-pace work and long runs with a fast finish. Add some runs on uneven or stone-paved surfaces and practise cornering at pace, as the historic centre has many turns.
