The race

About the Amsterdam Marathon

The Amsterdam Marathon was first held in 1975 and ran its 50th edition in 2025. It holds a World Athletics Platinum Label, and its organisers describe the course as one of the fastest in the world: the men's record of 2:03:30 was set in 2025 and the women's record of 2:16:52 in 2024.

The race starts and finishes in the 1928 Olympic Stadium and mixes city and countryside, with a long section beside the Amstel river past stately houses and windmills, as well as the city centre and Vondelpark. Flat and well organised, it is a good choice for a first marathon or a personal-best attempt in October.

Course

The Amsterdam Marathon course

The race starts and finishes in the Olympic Stadium, built for the 1928 Games. Along the way it loops through Vondelpark, runs through the passage under the Rijksmuseum and past the Heineken Experience, and takes in the city centre.

The heart of the race is a long stretch beside the Amstel river, part of the 1928 Olympic marathon route, where the course leaves the city past stately houses and windmills before heading back in. The return brings you to the stadium for the finish on the track. The course is flat, with its highest point only about 10 m above sea level, but the open riverside sections can be windy, so run in a group there.

Race-day weather

Mid-October mornings in Amsterdam are usually cool, around 8–13°C and often cloudy, and wind or showers are common.

For this course

Amsterdam is in mid-October, so your build runs through summer and early autumn. Do your hardest sessions early on hot days and expect your pace to come back as the weather cools in September. The course is flat, so prioritise marathon-pace work and long runs on flat routes, but also practise holding pace into a headwind, as the Amstel section can be exposed. Late-season races can be cool and damp, so test your race kit in the rain on a long run.
