The race

About the Barcelona Marathon

The Barcelona Marathon is one of Spain's oldest marathons, first held in 1978, and today one of the largest in Europe: the 2026 edition reached its cap of 32,000 registered runners. It carries a World Athletics Elite Label and has become very fast at the front, with Fotyen Tesfay running 2:10:51 here in 2026, the second-fastest women's marathon in history.

Since a new route in 2026, the race starts on Passeig de Gràcia and finishes under the Arc de Triomf, taking in Gaudí, the old port and the seafront along the way. The mid-March date suits runners coming off a winter training block, and the mostly flat course works for first-timers and personal-best hunters alike.

Course

The Barcelona Marathon course

The race leaves Passeig de Gràcia and spends much of the first half crossing the Eixample grid, including a long straight on Carrer de València and the course's high point near the Sagrada Família at about 14 km. The route then crosses the centre by Plaça de Catalunya, runs down to the Columbus Monument and the old port, and follows the seafront past Ciutadella park and the Hotel Arts to the Fòrum.

The profile is gentle, with around 134 m of total climb and long straights. The seafront out-and-back around 30 km can be windy and feels long, and a couple of short rises come late, before a gently downhill run-in to the Arc de Triomf.

Race-day weather

Race morning in mid-March is usually mild and fresh, around 8–16°C, with the seafront section sometimes exposed to wind.

For this course

Barcelona falls in mid-March, so most of your build happens in winter: protect your long runs from cold-weather shortcuts and do some marathon-pace work in whatever conditions you have. The course is flat enough to reward even pacing, so practise holding goal pace on long, straight roads rather than chasing fast early splits. Add a few sessions into a headwind or on exposed routes, as the seafront section in the second half can be breezy, and keep some short uphill strides for the late rises.
