The race

About the Buenos Aires Marathon

The Buenos Aires Marathon has been run since 1984 and is organised by the Asociación Ñandú. The organisers bill it as the fastest race in Latin America, and the records back them up: Evans Chebet ran 2:05:00 here in 2019, and in 2026 Rebecca Kangogo Chesir set the women's record of 2:23:36.

The loop starts and finishes by the Palermo parks and takes in the Obelisco, Plaza de Mayo, La Boca and Puerto Madero on flat roads. Held in early spring with cool mornings, it suits runners chasing a personal best and anyone who wants to combine a fast marathon with a trip to one of South America's great cities. Registration is straightforward, with no ballot.

Course

The Buenos Aires Marathon course

The start and finish are on Avenida Figueroa Alcorta at Dorrego, beside the Bosques de Palermo, with corrals released in waves from just before 7:00. From Palermo the loop heads into the city.

Along the way it passes the Obelisco on Avenida 9 de Julio and the Teatro Colón, Plaza de Mayo and the Casa Rosada, the painted streets of La Boca around Caminito and the docklands of Puerto Madero, before returning to Palermo for the finish. The whole route is flat, with no climbs worth planning for, so the main factors are pacing, any spring wind and staying patient in the crowded early kilometres.

Race-day weather

Usually cool in early spring, around 9-14°C at the 7:00 start, sometimes with wind.

For this course

Runners from Europe build through their summer, so manage the heat with early long runs and slightly slower paces in July and August; race morning will usually feel cool by comparison. Local runners train through the austral winter instead. The flat course suits marathon-pace work, so include long runs with sustained blocks at goal pace. Buenos Aires is five hours behind France in September, so arrive three or four days early to adjust your sleep for the 7:00 start.
