The race

About the Los Angeles Marathon

The Los Angeles Marathon, held every March since 1986, crosses the city from Dodger Stadium to Century City on a route the organisers call Stadium to the Stars. More than 27,000 runners registered for 2026, which makes it one of the largest marathons in the United States.

The appeal is the tour: downtown, Echo Park and Silver Lake, Hollywood Boulevard, the Sunset Strip, Beverly Hills and Rodeo Drive, all on closed roads with neighbourhood crowds along the way. Early climbs and the chance of a warm morning keep it from being a pure fast course, even though it loses height overall. It suits runners who want a big-city marathon with real variety, and first-timers who like plenty of support.

Course

The Los Angeles Marathon course

From Dodger Stadium the course drops quickly into Chinatown and downtown, passing City Hall, Little Tokyo and Walt Disney Concert Hall. Between roughly miles 4 and 9 it works through Echo Park and the rolling streets of Silver Lake, which hold the steepest sustained climb of the day.

Hollywood Boulevard and the Walk of Fame follow, then the Sunset Strip through West Hollywood and Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The route continues west through Westwood and Brentwood before turning back toward Century City, with a long, gentle downhill in the closing miles. The finish is on Santa Monica Boulevard at Avenue of the Stars.

Race-day weather

Usually 10-15°C at the 7:00 start under clear or hazy skies, warming toward 20°C or more by late morning.

For this course

A March race means a winter build, so most long runs happen in the cold: plan a few sessions in warmer conditions or with extra layers in case race morning turns warm. Train on rolling terrain, since the Silver Lake climbs come early and the steep descents later punish quads that are not used to running downhill. Start conservatively over the first 10 km. From Europe the time difference is large, so arrive four or five days early to settle your sleep before the 7:00 start.
