The race
About the Hamburg Marathon
The Hamburg Marathon has been run since 1986 and is one of Germany's largest marathons, with 20,000 places for the full distance. It is also seriously fast: Amos Kipruto set the men's course record of 2:03:46 in 2025, and Brillian Kipkoech lowered the women's record to 2:17:05 at the 40th edition in 2026.
The course is a sightseeing tour of a port city: the Reeperbahn, the Elbe, the harbour, the Alster lakes and the leafy northern districts, with big crowds in the centre. It suits first-timers who want atmosphere and experienced runners looking for a spring personal best.
Course
The Hamburg Marathon course
The start and finish are on Karolinenstraße by the Hamburg Messe. From there the course heads onto the Reeperbahn and west along the Elbchaussee beside the Elbe, then turns back past the Fischmarkt, the Landungsbrücken, the Elbphilharmonie, HafenCity and the Speicherstadt. Through the Wallring tunnel and along the Jungfernstieg, you cross the Kennedybrücke and follow the Außenalster.
The second half goes north past the Stadtpark to City Nord and Ohlsdorf, the northernmost point, before returning down the west side of the Alster through Eppendorf and through Planten un Blomen to the finish. The organisers describe the course as nearly flat with a few short ramps; the quieter northern section is where you need to stay focused.
Race-day weather
Late-April mornings in Hamburg are usually cool, around 7–13°C, often with wind off the Elbe and the occasional shower.

For this course
Hamburg follows a winter build-up, so plan for long runs in cold, dark and sometimes icy conditions; a treadmill or a well-lit loop can save key sessions. The course is fast but exposed in places along the Elbe and the Alster, so practise holding pace into a headwind and running in a group. With an 08:30 start, rehearse early breakfasts and morning long runs over the last two months.
