The race

About the Lisbon Marathon

The Lisbon Marathon has been run since 1986 and is organised by Maratona Clube de Portugal. Since 2025 it has used a new course designed to take far more runners: it starts on the coast at Carcavelos, heads out to Cascais, then follows the ocean and the Tagus all the way into Lisbon, finishing on Praça do Comércio.

It is a scenic, low-lying route, and the elite race has been quick: the men's record, 2:05:45 by Andualem Shiferaw in 2022, was set on the previous course. The October date suits runners who trained through summer, and finishing beside the river is a fine way to end a season. Note that the 2026 race is on a Saturday.

Course

The Lisbon Marathon course

The start is on the coast road at Carcavelos, in front of the Nova School of Business and Economics. The first section runs west to Cascais before turning back east along the seafront through Oeiras. From there the course follows the riverside into Lisbon, through Belém and under the 25 de Abril Bridge, to finish on Praça do Comércio, the great square on the Tagus.

The organiser describes it as 100% ocean- and riverside, and it is essentially flat. The challenge is exposure: there is little shade along the water, and any wind off the Atlantic or the river can make some stretches harder. There is a cut-off at 30 km.

Race-day weather

Mid-October mornings on the Lisbon coast are usually mild, around 15–21°C, with a chance of sunshine and a breeze off the Atlantic.

For this course

An October race means a summer build: do long runs early in the morning, make fluids and electrolytes part of every long session, and accept slower paces on hot days. Because the course is flat and exposed along the coast, train for even pacing and include some runs into a headwind. If you are aiming close to six hours, practise run-walk pacing so you pass the 30 km cut-off (12:40) comfortably. The 2026 race is on a Saturday, so plan your travel and final days accordingly.
