The race
About the Milan Marathon
The Milan Marathon, first run in 2000, presents itself as the fastest marathon in Italy and is a natural spring target for runners in northern Italy and beyond. Its event records, 2:03:55 for men and 2:19:35 for women, both date from 2021, and in 2026 the women's winner ran 2:20:15, the second-fastest women's time in the race's history.
The race has grown quickly: about 15,000 marathon starters in 2026 and around 30,000 runners including the relay. In 2026 it switched to a one-way route from Corso Sempione, by the Arco della Pace, to Piazza del Duomo. It suits runners chasing a personal best and anyone who likes a big-city race with a strong charity side.
Course
The Milan Marathon course
Since 2026 the course is a single one-way route rather than a loop. You start on Corso Sempione with the Arco della Pace behind you, and the first 13 km were redesigned to take in more of the city's landmark areas. The race then crosses Milan's districts before finishing in Piazza del Duomo, in front of the cathedral.
Milan is a flat city, and the organiser presents the course as the fastest in Italy. With no hills to manage, the challenge is holding an even pace over a long, flat road. Music stages from about 4 km to 41 km help break the race into sections.
Race-day weather
Mid-April mornings in Milan are usually cool and fresh, around 8–16°C; the 2026 race was run in cool conditions.

For this course
Milan's April date gives you a winter-into-spring build. The course is flat, so the plan should centre on marathon-pace volume, with long runs containing extended goal-pace segments and steady tempo work, rather than hill reps. Practise starting conservatively, because a flat course and a big field make it easy to go out too fast. Spring weather varies, so test kit for both a cool start and a warmer finish, and rehearse fuelling at race pace.
