The race
About the Munich Marathon
The Munich Marathon has been part of the city's autumn calendar since 1983. Until 2024 it was run as the Generali München Marathon; since 2025 the city has awarded it to a new organiser, Laufstatt Event, and it is now MARATHON MÜNCHEN by Brooks, on a single-lap course that starts and finishes in the Olympiapark built for the 1972 Games.
It is a race with a festival feel rather than an elite record chase: the 2025 winners ran 2:18 and 2:31, and in 2026 it hosts the Bavarian marathon championships. It suits runners who want a well-supported autumn marathon through a city with plenty to see, from the old town to the Englischer Garten.
Course
The Munich Marathon course
The start is on the Spiridon-Louis-Ring in the Olympiapark. The course heads south along Leopoldstraße through Schwabing into the old town, turns at Sendlinger Tor and passes Marienplatz before swinging north into the Englischer Garten. It then crosses to the east side of the Isar through Bogenhausen and on to the Werksviertel.
The return comes back over the Ludwigsbrücke, past the Isartor and through the Siegestor towards the Olympiapark, finishing on Willi-Daume-Platz by the Olympiasee. The official profile stays between roughly 508 and 533 m above sea level, so the course is mostly flat, and 53 cheering zones spread support along the whole route.
Race-day weather
Mid-October mornings in Munich are usually crisp, around 5–12°C, often dry, with the occasional foggy or damp start.

For this course
Training for Munich runs through the summer, so schedule long runs early in the day and expect paces to feel easier once the weather cools. The course is mostly flat with only gentle rises, so steady marathon-pace work on flat roads matters more than hill strength. Mid-October mornings can be cold at the 09:00 start: rehearse your race kit on a chilly long run, and plan a warm layer for the wait in your start block.
