The race

About the Stockholm Marathon

The Stockholm Marathon has been run since 1979 and is one of the classic Nordic marathons. It is held on a Saturday, starts at midday and finishes inside the Stockholm Olympic Stadium, built for the 1912 Games, in front of a packed stand.

The route tours the islands of the city centre, from Gamla Stan to Djurgården and Södermalm, with water in view much of the way. It is not a flat course, and the women's course record, set by Grete Waitz in 1988, still stands. Runners come for the scenery, the crowds and the stadium finish rather than a fast time, and it suits anyone who enjoys a varied, lively city course.

Course

The Stockholm Marathon course

The race starts on Lidingövägen beside Östermalms IP, passes the stadium early on and heads down Sveavägen and past Central Station toward Gamla Stan. From there it swings out to Djurgården before crossing to Södermalm, where the course cuts through SoFo.

The hardest sections come in the middle of the race: Katarinavägen, then Hornsgatan and Lundagatan, the highest point of the course, and the climb over Västerbron. The route then runs along Norr Mälarstrand on Kungsholmen to City Hall, circles Gamla Stan a second time, follows Strandvägen and returns to finish inside Stockholms Stadion. Save energy for the middle third rather than the finish.

Race-day weather

At the noon start in late May or early June it is usually around 15–20 °C, and sunny, warm days are common.

For this course

Stockholm starts at noon, often in sunshine, so train for heat: do some long runs in the warmest part of the day and rehearse your meals and hydration for a midday start. Include hill repeats and rolling long runs to prepare for Katarinavägen, Lundagatan and Västerbron in the middle of the race. Late-spring daylight in Scandinavia is long, which makes evening sessions easy to fit in during the final weeks.
