The race
About the Tallinn Marathon
The Tallinn Marathon is Estonia's largest marathon and the centre of a September running weekend that also includes a half marathon, a 10 km fall race, a relay marathon and children's races. The marathon has been held every year since 2010, building on an autumn run that dates back to 2000, and now carries Swedbank's name.
The start and finish sit by Freedom Square on the edge of the medieval Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage site, and the route takes in the seafront along Tallinn Bay. Elite times are quick, with a men's course record of 2:09:22, yet it remains a compact, friendly race that suits travelling runners.
Course
The Tallinn Marathon course
The marathon is a single lap that starts and finishes by Freedom Square, beside the Old Town. The route follows streets and pedestrian paths that give a broad overview of the capital, including a long section along the shore of Tallinn Bay, past Kadriorg and the Russalka Memorial and out along the Pirita seafront road.
The course is mostly flat, with only minor rises, and the coastal stretches are the most exposed: a wind off the bay can make one direction feel long. The final kilometres bring you back toward the centre for a finish close to the Old Town, so keep something in reserve for the return along the water.
Race-day weather
On a mid-September morning in Tallinn it is usually around 10–15 °C, often with a breeze off the bay and a chance of rain.

For this course
Tallinn is mostly flat, so focus on steady marathon-pace work and long runs that finish strong. Train for wind: the bayside sections toward Pirita are exposed, so practise running in groups and holding effort rather than pace. Your build-up falls over the Baltic summer, with long light evenings that help you fit in volume; on warm days, move key sessions to early morning, and expect a cool start in mid-September.
