The race

About the Vienna City Marathon

The Vienna City Marathon has been held since 1984 and is one of Europe's big spring marathons, with 49,379 registrations across all races in 2026. The marathon starts by the United Nations complex across the Danube and finishes on the Ringstraße, taking in much of imperial Vienna on the way.

It is a fast race too: Samwel Mailu set the men's course record of 2:05:08 in 2023, and Tigist Gezahagn lowered the women's record to 2:20:06 in 2026. With a finish in front of the Burgtheater and a flat route past the Opera and Schönbrunn Palace, it suits first-timers and experienced runners alike.

Course

The Vienna City Marathon course

The start is on Wagramer Straße by the Vienna International Centre, and the field crosses the Danube straight away on the Reichsbrücke. The course passes Praterstern and the Prater, then follows the Ringstraße to the State Opera before heading out along the Wienzeile to Schönbrunn Palace.

From Schönbrunn the route turns back towards the centre. Around halfway the half-marathon runners peel off to their finish, while marathon runners continue on a second part of the course before finishing on the Ringstraße between the Burgtheater and City Hall. There are only 44 m between the lowest and highest points, so even pacing pays off; on warm days, the second half is where it gets hard.

Race-day weather

Mid- to late-April mornings in Vienna are usually cool to mild, around 8–16°C, but warm race days happen, as in 2026.

For this course

Vienna comes at the end of a winter build-up, so protect key long runs from snow and ice and use a treadmill when needed. The course is flat, but race day can be warmer than anything you trained in, as 2026 showed: practise drinking on the run, and in the last weeks do some runs in the warmer part of the day to adapt. Start conservatively, because warm days hit hardest in the second half.
