The race

About the Vilnius Marathon

The Vilnius Marathon is Lithuania's largest running event, held each September with the city's Old Town as its base. The full marathon distance has been part of the event since 2004, and Swedbank is the title sponsor. Alongside the marathon there are half-marathon, 10 km and 5 km races, walks and a children's run, which gives the weekend a broad, community feel.

The course takes in some of the best-known places in Vilnius, from Cathedral Square and the Old Town to Vingis Park and the banks of the Neris. It suits runners looking for an autumn marathon in a compact capital, with a relaxed atmosphere and a finish in the historic centre.

Course

The Vilnius Marathon course

The race starts and finishes near Cathedral Square, in the heart of Vilnius, where the race village, cloakroom and toilets are set up. The route takes in the Old Town, Vingis Park and the banks of the River Neris, and reaches as far as the forest at Valakampiai on the edge of the city, so you get a mix of historic streets, park roads and riverside running.

The organisers do not publish an elevation figure, so study the route map in the participant guide before deciding on your pacing, and check the timetable, which is confirmed closer to each race.

Race-day weather

On a mid-September morning in Vilnius it is usually around 9–15 °C, with a chance of rain.

For this course

Prepare for a mix of city streets, park roads and riverside stretches by varying your long-run routes, and add some rolling terrain and hill strides so changes in gradient do not catch you out. The build-up runs through the Baltic summer, so put key sessions in the cool of early morning and use the long evenings for easy volume. Mid-September mornings are usually cool, so test your race-day kit in light layers on a long run.
