The race

About the Zagreb Marathon

The Zagreb Marathon has been held since 1992 and is the marathon of the Croatian capital, run in October with every race starting and finishing on Ban Jelačić Square. The 2026 edition, the 34th, also hosts the World Masters Athletics marathon championships.

It is a small, relaxed race: a few hundred runners finish the marathon each year, alongside a half marathon, a 10 km and a relay. That suits runners who prefer space and a personal atmosphere to big-city crowds, and the lapped course means friends and family can see you several times.

Course

The Zagreb Marathon course

The marathon is made up of one 21 km loop followed by two 10 km loops, all starting and finishing on Ban Jelačić Square. The route leaves the square via Jurišićeva and Draškovićeva streets, heads east along Vlaška Street and Kvaternik Square onto Maksimirska Avenue, then comes back through the Lower Town via Nikola Tesla and Masarykova streets and the Republic of Croatia Square before returning along Ilica.

Because of the loops, you pass the centre several times, which helps with support and fuelling. The downside is that the later loops can feel lonely in a small field, so it pays to find a group early.

Race-day weather

Mid-October mornings in Zagreb are usually cool, around 7–14°C, sometimes with morning fog.

For this course

Your build-up runs through summer, so do long runs early and adjust paces in the heat. A lapped course in a small field means you may run long stretches alone: practise marathon-pace work solo, and break the race into its three loops in your head. Zagreb's trams run along several central streets, so watch your footing on rails and crossings, and get used to mixed urban surfaces in training.
