The race

About the Oslo Marathon

The Oslo Marathon was first run in 1981 and relaunched in its current form in 2004. Today the DNB Oslo Maraton is one of Norway's biggest running events, with more than 28,000 participants across its distances: marathon, half marathon, 10 km and children's races.

The marathon is run as two laps of the half-marathon course, starting and finishing at Rådhusplassen in front of City Hall, with long sections beside the Oslofjord. With around 350 metres of climbing it is not a fast course, but it is a scenic, well-supported city race in early autumn that suits runners who enjoy a challenge and a harbour-side finish.

Course

The Oslo Marathon course

The marathon covers the half-marathon loop twice, starting and finishing at Rådhusplassen in front of Oslo City Hall. Each lap combines the harbour front around Aker Brygge and Akershus Fortress with city streets and stretches along the Oslofjord, and recent routes have taken in the Opera House and Karl Johans gate.

Each lap has roughly 175 metres of climbing, about 350 metres for the full distance, so expect a series of short rises rather than one big hill. The second lap is where the course bites, as the same climbs come round again on tired legs. The organisers publish the exact route, with GPX files, closer to each race.

Race-day weather

On a mid-September morning in Oslo it is usually around 10–15 °C, with a chance of rain and a breeze off the fjord.

For this course

Oslo's two-lap course has about 350 metres of climbing, so build strength with hill repeats and rolling long runs, and run the second half of some long runs on a hilly loop to mimic lap two. The build-up runs through the Nordic summer, with long daylight that makes it easy to fit in volume; use it, but keep sessions in the heat of the day short. Expect cool September conditions on race morning.
